On December 24th and 25th, the faithful of our community in Hobart celebrated the holy feast of the Lord’s Nativity-Christmas. Festal services were celebrated in the chapel of the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which were led by Father Justin McDonnell.

During the sermon at the Divine Liturgy Fr Justin preached about the Kontakion, written originally by St Romanos the Melodist. His kontakarion is in the form of an extended poem on the Nativity of Christ «The Virgin today”. Fr Justin adapted St Romanos’ beautiful words for the sermon:  «The Lord God became of His own will the son of a mother. The Saviour of man lay as a child in the manger. Bethlehem opened the door to Eden, come let’s behold. We have found joy in this hidden place. Let’s experience the delight of paradise in a cave. There appeared an unwatened root, which sprouted with forgiveness.  There was found an undug well, from which David the Prophet once wanted to drink. And there the Virgin brought faith an infant, who at once quenched the thirst – that of Adam and David. Come let us then faster to this place where there has been born, a newborn baby, the Pre–eternal God!”

At the end of the Liturgy, everyone together joyfully sang the carol “God Eternal”, glorifying the Virgin-born.

Christ is born! Glorify Him!
