Even before the Ukrainian Catholic Church was officially liquidated in 1946, Soviet authorities in April 1945, through their mouthpiece, Yaroslav Holan (also known as Volodymyr Rosovych), began their campaign of discrediting the Ukrainian Catholic Church inUkraine.

Holan was really just an agent or employee of the NKGB.   Some of the assertions he made, now seem to be comical, but all his work was taken very seriously indeed.  For many years his words were imposed on school children and others.  Eventually he died mysteriously as often happened in those times.  A statue was erected in Lviv in his honour, but it was one of the first casualties of Ukrainian Independence.

Through him the NKGB depicted the church as a Polish and Austrian/German tool which was designed “… to break-up the unity and friendship of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples.”    Metropolitan Sheptytsky was described as a willing instrument of theVatican’s “conspiracy” with German Imperialism and was accused of plotting “a deadly blow against the Orthodox Church”.

Holan had friends, fellow NKGB officers, Serhii Danylenko, Klym Dmytrik and a man called I. Shabatin.  They claimed that the Greek Catholic bishops, together with other enemies of the Ukrainian people, went into hiding in 1944 in the occupation zones of the “American and British imperialists inGermany”.

OnOctober 10, 1949Khrushchev sent a report to Stalin “on the conclusion of the reunion of the Greek Catholic Church with the Orthodox Church in Western and Transcarpathian oblasts of the Ukrainian SSR”.  He told Stalin that the reunion was an outcome of a “mass movement” among the rank and file of clergy and faithful against the “hostile attitude” of the Greek Catholic Churches – “agents of theVatican”.

Nothing was said about the deportation, tortures, massacres and oppression of the Soviet authorities. The 1946 Lviv Sobor, as stated in the minutes was, in Soviet eyes, a massive “self liquidation of the union” ofBrest.

So many lies made it necessary to change the documents a number of times; but nothing mattered.  The falsification continued until the 1990’s.  In a round about way all these lies were eventually believed even by the Soviets themselves.  When our church was eventually granted freedom inMoscowin the early 1990’s Soviet authorities seemed to believe that it was virtually non existent.    When millions of people came out of the underground it must have been a real shock to the Soviet minds.  The present enemies of our church still cannot come to terms with it.  We continue to hear all kinds of fantasy about our own church history.  This will not stop anytime soon.  It will take a long time for all the poison to drain out of the system.

We must be comforted by one thing; God has not abandoned our church.  He loves us and continues to bless us.  The truth about our history must be told, but it is also incumbent on all of us to know it as well.  It is only in this way that we will not allow it to repeat itself.
