Father Tony Warwarek, the parish priest for Ukrainian Catholics in Tasmania, has informed Bishop Peter Stasiuk that due to insufficient numbers, the Holy Family Church at 185 Main Street, Moonah, Tasmania, will be closed.
Ukrainian Catholics have used the Church for over 60 years, recently exclusively. But the members are down and the church has been returned to the use of the Roman Catholic Church.
At its height there were about 100 families in the Launceston area alone. His Beatitude, Patriarch Myroslav Ivan Lubachivsky even paid a two day visit; there was a Ukrainian school and other community activity.
Many people moved interstate, others have passed away. Father Tony visited the parish monthly until recently. But the time has come to give God thanks for our history and the help we received from so many people.
It’s sad in a sense, but the many faithful, priests and sisters who visited have much to thank
God for the part that Launceston played in our Eparchial history.
