On Sunday 27th July 2014, the Parish of Saints Volodymyr and Olha in Adelaide held its annual Parish Feast Day.

Preparations began on Friday with Mrs. Maria Oleksyn and members of the Sestrytstvo (Ladies’ Committee) organizing the kitchen for a busy schedule the following day. In the evening Fr. Zenon and members of the Parish Council arrived to set up tables and chairs, crockery and cutlery in the upstairs section of the Patriarch Joseph Hall.

Saturday was a busy day of cooking for members of the Sestrytsvo, while Khrystyna Reszytnyk decorated the church with fragrant flowers.

Sunday’s Divine Liturgy began at the later time of 10 o’clock. Celebrating the Liturgy were Rev. Frs. Zdan Kolomyjec, Taras Horpynyak and Zenon Racki and deacon Wolodymyr Demchinsky, while he choir was conducted by Mrs. Nadia Racki. It was a pleasant surprise to welcome from Sydney Fr. Zdan and his wife Olya, who were visiting family in Adelaide. Fr Zdan was the main celebrant with Fr. Taras, parish priest of Our Lady of Protection, delivering the sermon.

After the Liturgy, everyone proceeded to the reception hall for the praznyk lunch. The praznyk began with an opening prayer and blessing.

Mrs. Maria Kara, chairperson of Saints Volodymyr and Olha Parish Council, welcomed everyone to the Praznyk, and then the Ladies’ Choir sang three beautiful songs to open the event.

Invited guests and speakers included Rev. Fr. Eugene Kvasniuk from Saint Andrew’s Ukrainian Autocephalic Orthodox Church, Rev. Fr. Michael Byk from Saint Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyivan Patriarchate, the Mayor of the City of Charles Sturt – Mrs. Kristen Alexander, and Mrs. Oksana Kosak, chairperson of Our Lady of Protection Ukrainian Catholic Parish Council. Also attending were many parishioners from our neighboring parishes of Our Lady of Protection and Saint Michael’s U.O.C.K.P.

Children were catered for at their own special table with refreshments and activities.

The Sestrytstvo and all those who helped did an outstanding job of catering and serving for the Praznyk, for which Fr. Zenon gave acknowledgement, thanks and praise.

Fr. Zenon greeted and congratulated Rev. Fr. Zdan on the 20th Anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood. The echoes of “Mnohaya Lita” filled the hall for Fr. Zdan, for all those who were baptized with the name of Volodymyr and Olha and for the ladies in the kitchen for their great effort in making the day a truly memorable one.

A raffle with many prizes and many prize-winners was a popular item, with the highlight being Fr. Zenon auctioning a doll in traditional Ukrainian embroidered costume.
