On July 17, 2019, the XI General Chapter in Rome elected a new General Superior of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil.
The newly elected General Superior is the 49 year old Provincial of the Sisters of Saint Basil of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Province in Romania, Mother Marcela Runcan. Present at the elections was Bishop Gregorgio Dimitri Gallaro of the Catholic Church of the Italian – Albanian Eparchy.

On the morning of that very day, Bishop Gallaro celebrated the Divine Liturgy for the Sisters at the General Chapter. The Sisters of the Mother of Perpetual Help Province sang the responses to the Divine Liturgy. After having been chosen the General Superior, Mother Marcela thanked God for His guidance and the tangible presence of the Holy Spirit. She then led the further work and prayer for the election of General Councilors.
On 17 July 2019, the XI General Chapter of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great Rome elected 49 year old Mother Marcela Duncan as a new General Superior. Hitherto, she had been Provincial Superior of the Order’s Romanian Province.
This historic election represents the passing of the torch from North-American leadership, for over 70 years, back to the restored provinces of Eastern Europe.
