Ask the Priest

Question

Hi,

I hope you are having a wonderful day. I had a question about my marriage. My husband and I got married in a civil ceremony with the Justice of the Peace. Years later, we both got baptized as Christians (Trinitarian non-Catholic) . Is our marriage sacramental even though we got baptized years after were married in a civil ceremony?

 Answer

You were baptised as Christians, but your marriage is not a Christian marriage.  In this situation in the Catholic Church you would be asked to have your marriage blessed by a priest – at least in a private ceremony.
