The parish of the Dormition of the Mother of God at 2 Holmes St, Ardeer held a daylong celebration on Sunday 18th January 2015.
It was the vigil of the feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. Bishop Peter Stasiuk and Fr. Zenon Chorkawyj celebrated the Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. The church choir under the leadership of Andrew Soloczynskyj lead the responses. Andrew is a local doctor but he always finds time to come to church and lead the congregation in prayer. He has been doing this for many years now.
Bishop Peter spoke about the spiritual characteristics of John the Baptist and how his personal qualities are an example for every Christian today.
In anticipation of the feast of the Theophany on Monday, water was blessed immediately after the liturgy. This water will be used by Fr. Zenon to bless every home in the parish starting from Monday 19th January in the afternoon.
The whole congregation walked over to the parish hall after the liturgy for the traditional Epiphany Eve supper. This supper traditionally follows the same dishes that are used on Christmas Eve. Those present sang carols throughout the meal as the dishes were presented.
This year as usual, members of the parish visit homes for carolling. One group, the Sunbury group, has been doing it for 30 years now. They made a special guest appearance during the meal. This year the carollers presented the parish with well over $3000.00 in donations they received during carolling. Some of the younger members of the group lead the singing with brilliant solo voices.
The ladies of the parish worked very hard to prepare for the day.
The Compline of the Feast of the Epiphany was held in the church at the conclusion of the day. Bishop Peter and Fr. Zenon presided while the cantor Andrew led the congregational singing.
It was a beautiful, special, and holy day.
