The last time the camp on Hindmarsh Island was used as a CYM camp was very many years ago. This year CYM Melbourne decided to change all that.
Fifty people gathered from December 26 till Jan 3 to hold a youth camp in this very beautiful part of the world.
It was a traditional camp with interesting programming, hikes, sports, cultural events, religious discussion, and a time to make new friends, and strengthen old friendships. The food was second to none.

Bishop Peter Stasiuk attended for three days. He led very interesting discussions with the different age groups present. The discussion centred around our Patriarchal Sobor topic of Ukrainian immigration and church unity in a very diverse world.

In 2020, each Eparchy in the world will send delegates to Lviv to discuss these very same topics. Our people now live in countries which speak various languages, and local customs frequently influence Ukrainian life. Our patriarch wants to know how we can continue to flourish as communities in such diverse cultures.
On Sunday Dec 29, Divine liturgy was celebrated with the assistance of Fr Zenon Racki. In the afternoon the campers welcomed visitors from the Adelaide Ukrainian school who presented a version of the traditional “vartap”. The performance was outstanding. The music, the costumes were really great. Special guest performers were Yurij Onyskiv of Adelaide and Alyssa Soloczynskyj of Melbourne.

The day was closed with a soccer game between the CYM campers and the Ukrainian School. The competition raised a lot of dust, but when it settled, the CYM claimed home ground and home crowd advantage and won by a goal.
The Adelaide community needs this kind of young camp experience. Hopefully another camp can be organized soon.
