On Sunday 15th March 2015, the third Sunday of the Great Fast (Lent), we celebrated the Veneration of the Holy Cross.

At the 9.30 Divine Liturgy, celebrated by Fr. Ivan Mysiv with deacons Edward Kostraby and Justine McDonald a special procession took part after the Tropar and Kontakion, where the children under the guidance of Sr. Lukia processed down the centre aisle towards the altar. The Cross led the procession followed by children, in embroidered shirts and blouses, carrying flowers and a garland. Meanwhile, the Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Mr. Volodymyr Holowko sang –

“To your Cross O Master, we bow in veneration,

and we glorify your holy resurrection”.

The Cross was placed reverently on a prepared place to the left of the tetrapod, where Fr. Ivan prayed a special prayer, then blessed it and the children with holy water.

The children prayed their own prayers in English and Ukrainian then placed their flowers and garland at the foot of the Cross.  In this special way, the children of the Cathedral parish took part in the Veneration of the Holy Cross.  Just as Jesus said-

“Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” (Mt. 19.14)

At the end of the Divine Liturgy Fr. Ivan thanked Fr. Andrij Mykytyuk for his service to the people in Australia and wished him, his wife and children all the best from all the parishioners and a safe trip back to Ukraine and all God’s blessings for his future pastoral work.  Following a short thank you from Fr. Andriy all present applauded as a sign of respect and thanks for his service.
