Catechesis in the Ukrainian Catholic Church is being examined

In the 2016, Synod of Bishops in Ukraine asked the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission to present the Synod with a report of the current state of religious education in our church around the world. It is understood that the main theme of the 2018 Bishops’ Synod will be “Catechesis”.

Four conferences have been planned. The first one has just been completed in Prudentopolis, Brazil (27th-29th July 2017). The next one will be held in Lviv, Ukraine (28th-30th August 2017). In October, a conference will be held in Winnipeg, Canada (16th-18th October 2017) and the last one will be in Stanford, USA (23rd-25th October 2017).

In Brazil, three Eparchies were represented. 135 people attended. 25 were from Argentina. All parish priests, bishops, and numerous Catechists attended. The conference was locally organized but the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission set the tone. Head of the Commission, Bishop Peter Stasiuk delivered the first paper on Catechesis in the next 10 years. Fr. Taras Barscevski spoke on Biblical Catechesis. Sr. Luiza Ciupa spoke on the review of the Catechetical directory. Mr. Nazar Duda introduced the about to be published Youth Catechism. Oksana Kuzmyk from Ukraine spoke on the Catechetical pedagogy.

The publication of our Catechism “Christ our Pascha” and its subsequent translation into many languages has created a real sense of enthusiasm in our church.

All the Eparchies reported on their strengths and weaknesses and presented many suggestions on how we in the whole church can work together to make our work more effective.

Each conference which will be held will follow a similar pattern.

Bishop Peter complemented the three Eparchies on their exemplary dedication to Catechesis in South America. There is a very effective programme in the church and local parishes. All parishes have separate Catechetical schools beside each parish church.

The publication of our Catechism “Christ our Pascha” and its subsequent translation into many languages has created a real sense of enthusiasm in our church. The strength of our parishes will be reflected by the education programmes of our children and adults.
