Caritas Australia CEO, Paul O’Callaghan has welcomed the appointment of a new Chair of Caritas Australia, Bishop of Port Pirie, Bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ AM DD and Deputy Chair, Bishop Peter Stasiuk CSsR AM DD.

Bishop O’Kelly has also been appointed to the Chair of the Bishops Commission for Justice, Ecology and Development. From 2012-2015 Bishop O’Kelly was appointed Deputy Chair in the Commission overseeing the work of Caritas Australia.

“We are delighted that Bishop Greg is taking up the leadership of Caritas Australia. He brings a wealth of experience to his role and already has substantial knowledge of the work of Caritas,” Mr O’Callaghan said.

In 1994, Bishop O’Kelly was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for services to education. He is a former Headmaster of Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview, one of the Sydney GPS Boarding Schools and Saint Ignatius’ College, Adelaide.

“Bishop O’Kelly has long been an effective advocate for the Church’s work in both education and in the field of social justice. As a Bishop in and one with a significant Aboriginal population, he brings a strong grasp of the issues faced by marginalised communities. Caritas Australia works alongside such communities in over 30 countries and aims to end poverty, promote justice and uphold the dignity of those at greatest risk.”

Caritas Australia’s Deputy Chair, Bishop Stasiuk, received an Order of Australia (AM) in 2009 for his service to religion and to the community, as Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholics of Australia, New Zealand and Oceania and through his contribution to Catholic welfare, counselling and development programs. A Redemptorist, in 2013 he celebrated his 20th year in Australia and over 45 years as a Catholic priest.

Caritas Australia is the international aid and development organisation of the Catholic Church in Australia and part of Caritas Internationalis, one of the world’s largest humanitarian networks.

The Caritas Australia appointments follow the recent elections for the various Commissions by the Australian Catholic Bishops.
