A fragile ceasefire seems to be holding in Ukraine between government forces and Russian-backed separatists in the East. But tensions between the nation’s churches remain.

The Patriarch of the 5 million-strong Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Major-Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, says his church is morally obliged to raise money to help equip the Ukraine national army in its fight against separatists.

Archbishop Shevchuk, who is touring Australia, also insists his church – which is from an Eastern tradition, resembling the Orthodox in style, but aligned to the Vatican – is not trying to convert Ukraine’s Orthodox Christians to Catholicism.
