The norm of Canon 86 of the Canons of Particular Law of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) states: “The sacrament of Christian Initiation culminates in partaking in the Most Holy Eucharist, and thus together with Baptism and Chrismation a newly baptised should receive Communion, in accordance with prescriptions of liturgical books” [see Special Edition of the Blahovisnyk of the Archbishop Major of Kyiv-Halych of the UGCC (2015), 31].

The prescription of Canon 92 of this law continues: § 1. The Eucharist may be administered to children after Baptism and Chrismation, and to persons who are mentally deprived of reason.

  • 2. With regard to the participation of children, those responsible for administering the Holy Eucharist, must ensure that the child is able to consume the Holy Eucharist, and in cases of doubt only administer with the Lord’s Blood.
  • 3. It is accepted, that a child who has reached the age of seven years, is mentally competent, and should be encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation / Confession” [see Special Edition of the Blahovisnyk of the Archbishop Major of Kyiv-Halych of the UGCC (2015), 32].

The Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, which took place at Ivano-Frankivsk 31st August – 6th September in the year of our Lord 2015, to assist the clergy to implement especially § 2 of Canon 92, has ratified the Directives for administering Holy Communion to infants and children in the UGCC.

In concluding the foreseen procedure of law, according to the norm of Canon 112 of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches,

we proclaim

the Directives for administering Holy Communion to infants and children in the UGCC, which have been ratified by the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, which took place at Ivano-Frankivsk 31st August – 6th September in the year of our Lord 2015 [decision 30],

and resolve

to bring it into lawful force within two months of the electronic publication of this lawful document on the official website of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (ugcc.ua) [see Canon 15 of the Canons of Particular Law of the UGCC].

The text of these Directives must also be published in the Blahovisnyk of the Archbishop Major of Kyiv-Halych of the UGCC.
